Yes, it may be the y ear 2000, the beginning of the new mellinium, but we still find ourselves shocked and dismayed, almost on a daily basis, by comments made
by some people in the news. We cannot believe our ears and eyes - and we think you'll see what we mean!
So, you think racism, sexism, anti-semetism,
homophobia and general bigotry are a thing of the past? We have selected a few choice sad-but-true quotes and listed them below.
Warning: Some are borderline amusingly stupid,
while others are simply horrifying. Please read these and decide for yourself:
2/00: Sadly, one of America's most beloved comedians and a person known for donating his time, voice and
celebrity for many generations to Muscular Dystrophy, was quoted recently saying, ``A woman doing comedy doesn't offend me, but sets me back a bit,'' Jerry Lewis said. ``I, as
a viewer, have trouble with it. I think of her as a producing machine that brings babies in the world.''
1/00: John Rocker, Atlanta Braves pitcher, told Sports Illustrated he would never play for a New York team
because he didn't want to ride a train "next to some queer with AIDS.'' He also said, "I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. ... How the hell did they get in this country?'' He
called a black teammate a "fat monkey,'' mocked the driving skills of Asian women and insulted single mothers.
2/99: Washington-area shock jock, DOUG "THE GREASEMAN" TRACHT, who lost his job for making a
racially insensitive reference to the Texas dragging death of James Byrd, Jr. apologized Wednesday "to anyone and everyone who was hurt'' by it. Tracht, was fired from his
morning drive job at WARW Radio on Feb. 25th after playing a portion of a song by Grammy-award winning recording artist and philanthropist, Lauryn Hill, Tracht had
said, "No wonder people drag them behind trucks.''
Tracht has made similarly inappropriate statements before. In 1986, in a reference to the Martin Luther King
holiday, he said, "Kill four more and we can take the week off.''
2/99: REVEREND JERRY FALWELL published an article in his "National Liberty Journal" with an ardent warning to parents against allowing their children to watch
the extremely popular public television show "Teletubbies" because Falwell says, "one character, named Tinkie Winkie" is an "obvious portrayal of a Gay male." The Reverend asserts that the conclusion is based upon 3
things: 1. Tinkie Winkie has a triangle on his head, a "gay-pride symbol" , 2. he occaisionally "carries a purse" (which the character calls a bag) 3. he is purple, a "Gay color."
12/98: When world renowned playboy HUGH HEFNER was asked in a recent interview how long he planned to
continue with his notorious lifestyle, he replied, "You know, they say it's not over `til the fat lady sings, and well, we don't let fat ladies on the property, so…"
Profetic occurance: A few weeks later "The Roseanne Show" was broadcast from the property. We guess this means it's over?!
9/98: REGGIE WHITE, an ordained minister and NFL champion, proved not to be the brightest star in the Green
Bay Packers recently: While addressing Wisconsin lawmakers he called homosexuality a sin and spoke in racial stereotypes, claiming blacks were gifted worshippers,
whites were good at tapping into money and American Indians weren't enslaved because they knew the territory and "how to sneak up on people."
